The Role of Missionaries in Tamil Grammatical Reconstruction

Abstract

The concept of language and nation which originated in European thought in the eighteenth century brought world languages into the grammatical generality. The project was designed to identify the relationship of the language. This work was an attempt to identify linguistic relationship between the language contributed to European globalization and grammatical proliferation. The fundamental data for this had been received from the Christian priests who travelled throughout the world and learned languages from grammar books and the dictionary. The project never had any problem in confronting the Indian tradition. Because the project was a grammar-dictionary was popularized by clergies and administrators before reaching India in 17 AD. The grammar dictionaries were originated by European priests starting from the 17th century AD.  We have received the complete grammar of Christian missionaries by the 18th century. These grammar books make some innovative changes in the grammar. The data obtained from the study of the grammatical texts of  Ziegenbalg, Beschi and Rhenius on which this is based, suggest that the missionaries who came to Tamil Nadu had a grammatical approach of Tamil. They also present some theoretical ideas for the modernization of Tamil Grammar. Based on this, this research article will identify some theoretical ideas.
