Abstract

In the contemporary creative landscape, characterized by a proliferation of novel poetic expressions, the representation of visually impaired creators remains notably sparse. This disparity necessitates an examination of the underlying factors, encompassing creative politics, educational frameworks, and the nuanced visual experiences of visually impaired individuals. Despite their forays and achievements across diverse domains, the persistent underrepresentation of visually impaired individuals within the realm of modern poetic creation warrants in-depth analysis. It is crucial to acknowledge the dichotomy within the visually impaired community, distinguishing between those with congenital visual impairment and those who acquired it later in life. This distinction engenders divergent perceptions and interpretations of environmental stimuli. This divergence introduces complexities in defining the interplay between creative output, the creator, and the contextual milieu. It is posited that consistent engagement with poetic literature and sustained creative practice, grounded in comprehension, familiarity, and experiential depth, can cultivate both poets and critics of modern poetry. This assertion is made with the understanding that congenital or acquired visual impairment does not pose an insurmountable barrier to such development. To substantiate this claim, this study undertakes an evaluation of Gnana Koothan’s “Balajiku Hareram” through an analysis derived from field research and discussions with contemporary visually impaired individuals actively involved in modern poetry.
